If this is not the most romantic story, I don’t know what is… A moving castle powered by a magic fire, which happens to be a fallen star. A handsome but heartless wizard falling in love with a girl, whose heart is fierce, pure and kind. The scarecrow, Witch of the waste, King and his brother, strong-minded sisters and stepmom…So many incredible characters created by author Diana Wynne Jones and became alive thanks to Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli. Howl’s Moving Castle is by far, one of my all-time favorite films.
Sophie, a young hatter got cursed by an evil witch and lost her youth. But getting old only gave her the courage to go on an adventure she’d been dreaming of. She became fearless, a little reckless, and most importantly, honest with herself. Howl, on the contrary, was never an honest person. He « slithers » out of most responsibilities, but when confronted with Sophie’s heart and his loved ones, he had to step out out his comfort zone, and face his biggest fear……
Diana Jones’s original book Howl’s Moving Castle, is quite different from Miyazaki’s Academy Award nominated movie, and they are both so beautiful! If you have the chance, I strongly recommend looking at both. In 2013 Miyazaki said the film was his favorite creation, explaining « I wanted to convey the message that life is worth living, and I don’t think that’s changed. » The movie is thematically significantly different from the book; while the book focuses on challenging class and gender norms, the film focuses on love, and personal loyalty and the destructive effects of war.
